2013 Convention Options
Sep 27, 2012 - Yesterday all Afterburner subscribers received a personalized email ballot to vote for our 2013 Convention location. Initial votes are coming in and we'll keep the voting open until Oct. 5.
At issue is the difficulty of coordinating military base conventions and the declining military base attendance. Coupled with the large number of CJAA attendees at NWOC, the thought of co-locating CJAA Convention and NWOC crossed our minds.

Sep 21, 2012 - Even if you've never attended the National Championship Air Races at Reno, undoubtedly you've seen photos of the 2012 races, the 2011 races and others. As entertaining as the races are, much goes into making the races happen - Racing School, insurance, volunteer staff, and ... The Chase Aircraft.
Reno concludes safely - Vandam wins (again)
Sep 17, 2012 - The 2012 Reno National Air Races concluded safely with CJAA member Rick Vandam winning the Jet class for the second year in a row. His speed in American Spirit (L-39 Albatros owned by Ed Noel) of 490.629 MPH was fastest among all the classes, and during a Tuesday qualifying heat, Rick pushed his jet to 504.658 MPH.
91.531 Second in Command Exemptions
Sep 12, 2012 - Earlier this year, a revised interpretation of 14 CFR, 91.531 (Second in Command requirements) led the FAA to suspend single-seat, jet warbird rating, check rides. Many of our MiG, Sabre and other pilots are affected.
Reno Races Safety Brief
Sep 8, 2012 - Safety awareness is high at Reno this year. The NTSB just released their 2011 crash report and several of their representatives are here to observe the races personally. The FAA is on high alert and new ramp security procedures are in place. Safety is paramount this year.
Pilots and aircraft were required to be onsite today (Sat, Sep 8) for inspection, and since nothing else was planned until Sunday, why not conduct a Reno Safety Brief?
Another 61.58 single-pilot turbojet reminder
Sep 7, 2012 - An email notice from FAA Safety Team was received this morning reminding all of the upcoming 61.58 proficiency check requirement. Essentially, beginning October 31, 2012, a proficiency check will be required annually for a PIC of any turbojet certified for single pilot operation. The rule, which was changed last year, gave pilots of these aircraft 1 year to obtain the necessary check before it becomes mandatory on 10/31/2012. While the requirement shouldn't come as a surprise to CJAA members, this email triggered other thoughts:

Jet Blast - USAF Style
Sep 2, 2012 - "This nine-minute video was created to commemorate the 67FS winning the 2011 Raytheon Trophy for outstanding aerial achievement, given to the top air-to-air squadron in the USAF.
The footage was shot over one year of flying with a Sony HD Handycam and GOPRO Hero. The footage was shot entirely by pilots, no combat camera personnel were used.
MiG and Vampire restorations at Pima
Sep 1, 2012 - CJAA members near Tuscon have two news reasons to visit the Pima Air and Space Museum - This week, two of the newest aircraft restorations are on display: a MiG-15 and a Vampire jet fighter.
The museum's spokesperson, Tim Vimmerstedt, explained the history of the MiG-15 in a news release:

Aug 31, 2012 - The FAA’s 34th annual General Aviation and Part 135 Survey for 2011 data is underway and available online at www.aviationsurvey.org.
"Reducing GA fatalities is a top priority of the FAA and our goal is to reduce the GA fatal accident rate by 10 percent by 2018,” said FAA Acting Administrator Michael Huerta. “By taking the time to participate in the FAA’s GA survey, owners and operators share valuable data that help the entire GA community.”
