Is your Annual Program Letter due?

Jan 18, 2013 - Most Operating Limitations issued by the FAA to operators of Experimental Exhibition Aircraft contain a Limitation that is worded as follows:

The owner operator must submit an annual program letter to the geographically responsible FSDO where the aircraft is based. All operations must be conducted in accordance with these limitations and the program letter. A copy of the current program letter and any amendments must be carried on board the aircraft any time that the aircraft is being operated.

Supertweet flies!

Jan 12, 2013 - For the last four years, CJAA member Charlie Largay has been painstakingly documenting his restoration of N87921, a Viet Nam-era Cessna A-37B Dragonfly. Followers of his blog have learned the difficulties of obtaining (or having to fabricate) spare parts, all the assembly and maintenance surprises along the way, and of course, getting all the paperwork blessed by the FAA, the insurance company and others.

Wanted: Pilot Proficiency Examiners

Jan 3, 2013 - The FAA, in conjunction with the Experimental Pilot Proficiency Examiner Qualifications Review Committee, seeks qualified individuals to apply for a new candidate pool to support future needs for Pilot Proficiency Exams (annual 61.58 proficiency check rides). The purpose of the pool is to provide names to the FAA National Program Manager in a timely manner for appointment when a need has been identified.

2013 Convention Registration Open

Dec 18, 2013 - CJAA's 2013 Convention schedule and location are firm. We will be meeting Thursday, February 21 at the Red Lion Hotel in Seattle, WA. Our convention precedes the National Warbird Operator Conference (NWOC), also a fine warbird conference, and CJAA members are encouraged to take advantage of two great aviation conventions in one location.

As there are three parties (CJAA, NWOC and Red Lion) involved, registration is different than convention registration in the past. Essentially there are three steps:

2013 Membership Drive and Convention

Dec 11, 2012 - Once again it is that time of year to request your CJAA Membership renewal. In this time of economic austerity I am certain that cost/benefit analysis enters everyone's mind, even the $100 membership fees in Classic Jets.

Just review the many benefits of our association, e.g., invitations to attend Jet Blasts and our annual convention, receipt of flight instruction and safety tips from some of the best instructors and pilots in the world, formation training and certification opportunities, wonderful camaraderie with fellow pilots, our website and forum sharing of information, immediate access to late breaking developments through the Afterburner newsletter,

Upcoming Hollister Formation Practice

Dec 1, 2012 - A half-dozen pilots and aircraft are planning a (weather-permitting) FAST Practice at Hollister over the Dec 8-9 weekend. This is an informal gathering but if nearby pilots are seeking a FAST rating or upgrade, this is the ideal opportunity.

Interested parties should contact Mike Mangold at 760-954-9396 for more information.

2013 CJAA Convention Scheduled

Oct 17, 2012 - Thanks to all the CJAA members who participated in our convention location vote. Both sides offered good arguments for continuing the military base format and for trying an "NWOC alignment" format. The vote was close, but in the end, the majority voted for an NWOC alignment.

Enjoying Full Aerobatics Waiver

Oct 9, 2012 - CJAA member Martin Mattes of Bandit Airshows enjoying a new 500ft full aerobatics waiver in his L-29.

Gadsden Fly-In Review

Oct 8, 2012 - By the numbers, this was one of the larger fly-ins - 15 L-39s and assorted others, 35 pilots, 11,000 gallons of Jet-A, three very busy Examiners performing 61.58 proficiency rides, two new L-39 ratings and another handful of FAST signoffs.

Required for Flight - PC

Oct 1, 2012 - To the never-ending argument of whether aircraft fly due to aerodynamic lift or FAA paperwork, we now add a third component. Now flight requires, at least from a pilot perspective, a personal computer.

Effective today, pilots needing flight medicals may no longer fill out FAA form 8500-8 in their AME's office - Applicant pilots must now fill out the form online before going to their AME's office.
